The 2021 SVE HOA election time is nearing. Ballots will be mailed and/or emailed on or about February 2, 2021 and homeowners of SVE will be voting to fill five vacancies on our Board of Directors. The following Candidates have submitted their names for consideration.
When you receive your ballot on or about February 2, 2021, you will be asked to consider and vote on your choice of candidates for the Board of Directors and on two (2) Association Business items. Below is a link to the narratives page that describe each ballot item:
||My name is Melvin “Mick” Borton. My wife and I moved to Sunland Village East from Tempe, AZ in the spring of 2010 and are fulltime residents. Since moving here, I have been an active member of the SVE Softball Club and have served as the club secretary, and currently serve as their President. I am also a member of the Tennis Club and enjoy playing tennis.
I grew up on a farm in northwest Ohio near Wauseon, where we grew crops and were poultry farmers. In 1969, I joined the US Marine Corps, serving two years and a tour in Vietnam, earning the Vietnam Service Medal. I have an associate’s degree in Retail Mid-Management from Northwest State Community College, Archbold, Ohio. In 1977, I started a career with the US Postal Service in Ohio as a letter carrier and finally retiring in 2008 in Tempe, AZ. While living in Ohio, I served on a board of a christian organization that supported a ‘boy’s farm’ where our goal was to rehabilitate young men who were trying to turn their lives around. Our ministry was redirecting them through spiritual counseling and helping them to make better choices to lead a better life. My wife and I attend Tri-City Baptist Church in Chandler, AZ.
If elected to the SVE HOA Board of Directors, I believe I can make a difference by being fair and honest to all residents when making decisions that affect our community.
||My name is Linda Cerf, I am 72 years old, have two daughters and 3 grandchildren. My husband, Albert, is a 20-year US Air Force Veteran. We celebrated our 50-year anniversary in 2020.
I grew up in Southern California and worked for a Mortgage Broker for 35 years as his Escrow Officer, Loan Processor, Document Preparer, Document Signer and Office Manager. I was still doing his loan documents up until 5 months ago when I retired. I also worked as a bookkeeper handling the payables, receivables and payroll.
While my daughters were growing up, I was a Girl Scout Leader and also helped them with their competitive roller skating.
Sunland Village East has been our home since 2007. I previously served on the SVE HOA Board from 2013 thru 2016 as Vice President the first year and the Treasurer the other three years. It’s important to me to be an active member in this community. I have been a member of the Tennis Club since 2007 and a Bingo volunteer for the past 8 years as the “backup” for one of the managers. I am very anxious to resume Bingo in our community. Bingo has helped keep our fees down by passing on the earned money to the community.
Sunland Village East is a beautiful community. It would be my pleasure to serve on the board again.
||I worked for US Geological Survey for 34 years, starting as a laboratory chemist and ending my career as the Program Officer of the Water Resources Division for the Western United States.
I have managed complex projects, written many technical papers and reports, managed multi-million dollar budgets; and hired and worked with many managers and doctorate-level research scientists far smarter than myself.
My major accomplishments here in SVE are:
I want to continue the thoughtful, careful management legacy our current board has given us.
||I am Dr. Joyce Haynie and my husband and I were residents of Gilbert for 23 years before moving to SVE in 2017. My career and volunteer experiences are extensive and have been a great training ground for serving on the SVE board. With a passion to help others, a desire to give back to my community, and a talent for organization, I feel I’m a strong candidate for the SVE board.
I have a Master’s degree in Counseling from NAU and a Doctorate in Health Sciences from A.T. Still University. I directed the admissions process for ATSU in Mesa for 12 years. I managed the applicant interview process for medical, dental and health science programs, organized student and applicant activities, open houses, and graduations and was the student government advisor. I was the board educational liaison at Adelante Community Health Center, the multi-cultural committee chairman at NAAHP, a board member of AFASA committee, and a Health Professions Advisor for the NHSC. I’ve been faculty for Ottawa University and Chandler Community College.
Prior to ATSU, I was involved with Gilbert Fire public education, a board member of Gilbert Citizen Action Network, and the committee chair for the Gilbert Fire Explorer program. I have served with the Boy Scouts for many years as a Cub Scout Committee Chair, Scout Advancement Chair, and sat on the District Advancement Committee. I feel these activities have been a great training ground for the SVE board and I look forward to serving my community.
||I was born and raised in Montana. I spent 15 years in the medical field as a Respiratory Theapist, then went into banking and finally attended college and earned my Bachelor's degrees in Secondary Education and Special Education. I have nearly completed my Master's degree in Counseling. I joke that all of my past experience and degrees have helped me work well with my real estate clients.
My husband, Steve and I have been married 15 years and have 3 adult children, ages 21-26. We relocated to Arizona in 2010 and have loved living here. At that time Steve retired and I began my new career as a Realtor. I have found my niche and love my career.
Steve and I purchased a home in SVE in 2019 and moved into the Village in May of 2020 with hopes of enjoying all the community has to offer. Covid-19 slowed that down. We intend to become involved in several clubs, including pickleball and quilting clubs once things reopen.
My life and past career experience give me the ability to think outside the box. I am a certified negotiator and able to mediate and facilitate growth in the SVE community.
My goal as a board member would be to be the voice of the community. Relaying and representing the needs and wants of SVE home owners while helping maintain all that SVE offers its community.
||My name is Autom Underwood and I am running for the SVE Board of Directors because I believe I have a lot to offer to this wonderful community. My husband and I have owned property in SVE for 18 years and have been full-time residents for the last five years. Currently I am the Board liaison to the Pool Enhancement Committee. Prior to that I was Chairperson of that committee where I designed and oversaw the updates to the North and South pools. I am active in the SVE Golf Club and enjoy the social life here in SVE.
My business experience includes owning a small business with a large client base for 30 years and managed several employees. I was an Interior Designer for both residential and commercial projects.
My volunteer experience includes being a member and president of Soroptimist International and managing a group of volunteer women who collected and mailed Care packages to our overseas military personnel. Additionally, I served as volunteer on our past HOA in California.
I have been a member of the SVE Board since early 2020 when I was appointed to replace a member of the Board who resigned her position at the beginning of Covid-19 pandemic. This presented me with an entirely different experience from what I had expected my tenure to be. The daily demands that all Board members have faced have challenged us to do what is in the best interest of the community as a whole. Applying the Covid-19 requirements of the CDC, state and county to the SVE amenities and activities while balancing the safety and desires of our owners has been primary to my duties as a Board member. It is my intention to continue with this effort to the best of my ability. I believe I have the personality and organizational skills required to be an active and contributing member to the Board.
Thank you for considering me for this important position.
